Gray Day

Since I am a colorist, people are at first surprised when they encounter this muted scene. But on closer inspection, you can see that even on a gray day, I can't help but see the underlying colors which cry out to be expressed. The day was cold, but the wind was totally calm. The water outside the cabin window was as smooth as glass -- something that doesn't happen frequently in northern Minnesota, where the wind always seems to make its presence known. The purples and blues in the painting are a premonition of the icy blast of winter that was just around the corner. But, for now, I could sit back and enjoy the "colors of gray." Oil on canvas.
